Since the 2015 defeat of the Peoples Democratic Party in the presidential election and the exit of President Goodluck Jonathan from Aso Rock, Abuja, most prominent politicians of the PDP stock have unfolded their political fangs and persuasions. Those politicians were only interested in the benefits that come with political power, and in the words of Olusegun Obasanjo, the sweetness of the honey pot. And who is that foolish man that would stay around when the honey pot is dry and nothing to lick? Multitude of politicians are jumping ship and defecting to the APC despite the admonitions of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun to such people to remain in their party and build a formidable opposition party.

Prince Uche Secondus, Acting National Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Prince Uche Secondus
Our politicians that are controlled by the bread and butter politics would hear none of that. It is, however, a thing of joy that some members of the party have decided to shun the lure and attraction of joining the APC. These are the very democrats and it is to the eternal sacrifice of such people that the country is yet to descend into one party rule.
Heavy weights in the mould of Chief E K Clark, senators and former state governors are turning their back on the PDP and inventing all manner of excuses why they did what they did. But the vast majority of Nigerians cannot be led through the garden path and that they are doing just that to remain relevant and guarantee the sources of easy money to oil their outlandish life styles. This gale of defections may not end very soon and going by the vibrations from the judiciary, the PDP may lose some state governorship and senatorial positions to the APC and those affected may also see the `wisdom` of joining the APC. No nation develops when politicians see politics as a means of personal enrichment while, the winter of opposition is dreaded.
That is why the likes of Uche Secondous, Chief Olisa Metuh, Governor Ayo Fayose, Governor Serike Dickson and other committed members of the PDP should keep the faith. The recent victory of PDP in the governorship election in Bayelsa State is the best affirmation yet that PDP is alive and kicking and that the March 2015 presidential defeat was a temporary set back. And should the members of the party imbibe the spirit of true democracy in party primaries and allow the choice of the party members to prevail in party congress, the party shall bounce back as the darling of Nigerians.
Currently, there are cracks in the ranks of APC and if the PDP can continue to exploit that opportunity that saw the election of Senator Ike Ekweremadu as deputy senate president, the future of the party is bright and by implication shall deepen the growth and development of democracy in Nigeria. Therefore, the forth coming congress of the party from the ward level to the national level should be done with the best of intentions obeying all the fine tenets of democracy. The party must shun imposition of candidates at any level.
The local government council chairman and the state governor by any stretch of imagination should not be regarded as the leaders of the party. The elected party chairman at the local council level and the state chairman should be respected and the constitution of the party should be strictly adhered to. It was the manipulation of the party primaries and the way some people were fenced out of the party that led to the mass exodus of PDP members that merged with others of like mind to form the mega party,
APC. It is hoped that the PDP has learnt its lesson and should do all within its power to build a formidable political party premised on the finest ingredients of democracy and the rule of law. Nobody should be defied as the owners of the party, all party members should be on the same pedestal. And the first step towards that is to regulate the funding of the party. No political merchant should be allowed again to buy the soul of the party and continue to play the puppeteer. When that is done, there will be a level playing ground for all members.
Some people may not  admit it, the fact is that PDP is the most cohesive and nationalistic party in the country. The party can be found in every ward. It was impunity and arrogance that denied the party victory in last year presidential election. Jonathan may get the blame but those who printed only one presidential form should be held responsible for the political disaster that befell the party. The party is on the path to self discovery and should continue to offer alternatives to the policies of the government. It is beyond condemning every policy of the government.
Condemn and provide a viable alternative. It is also on this score that the Buhari administration should be above board in the prosecution of those accused of corruption. It does not make sense for the Buhari administration to swim in the ocean of delusion that the moment you convert from PDP to APC, you become a saint. The anti-corruption war should be colour blind, religion blind, tribe blind and party blind. The various PDP state governors should embark on viable projects and truly dispense dividends of democracy to the electorate. When that is done, the people of this great nation shall eventually give the party another shot at the presidency. The PDP must not be allowed to die because it contributed a lot to the growth and development of our democracy not minding some of its warts.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, Friday, urged Nigerians to support the sincere efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari to develop the country on all fronts, just as he said that no meaningful development can take place without unity and cohesion.
Governor Ambode, who spoke shortly after performing the laying of wreath ceremony as part of activities marking the 2016 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration, said it was important for all Nigerians to rededicate their lives in a manner that would always promote unity of the country as exemplified by the supreme sacrifices paid by the fallen heroes.
The Governor said without the sacrifices paid by men and officers of the Armed Forces, there would not have been a country called Nigeria today, and as such it was for the people to always refrain from actions that are inimical to the peace, unity and oneness of the nation.
According to Governor Ambode, the current administration of President Buhari has so far displayed his passion for the development of the country, but it was important for all to support the President in his quest to massively develop the country.
Speaking on the significance of the remembrance service, Governor Ambode said: “If you look at the history of Nigeria, today we remember our fallen heroes. Without them there will be no Nigeria as we speak and so it is very important that beyond even remembering them, we should also rededicate our lives in a manner that we will always remember that the cohesion of Nigeria is so significant and that it is important for all of us to hold Nigeria together and that is really the significance of this event.”
When asked on pockets of threats to national security in some sections of the country, Governor Ambode said: “They are really not threats because they are being fully combated by the Federal Government and as you can see, we are making progress and we are having improvement on security of the country.
“So, I just want to advise Nigerians that the unity of Nigeria is more important than anything you can think of. It is only when we are united that we can make progress. You know the present administration is so particular about the development of the country. Nigeria is bigger than any individual and so we advise all Nigerians to know that the cohesion and unity of Nigeria is what is paramount to this government,” the Governor said.
Also speaking at the event, Oba Akiolu prayed for the families left behind by the fallen heroes, and urged Nigerians to be disciplined and commit to do the will of God.
He said all that the fallen heroes fought for revolved around having a united, peaceful and disciplined nation.
Other dignitaries who performed the laying of wreath at the event held at the Remembrance Arcade, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos include the Lagos State Chief Judge, Justice Olufunmilayo Atilade; Commander 9 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Bulama Biu; Commanding Officer, Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft, Apapa, Navy Commodore Abraham Adaji; Commander, 435 Base Service Group, Ikeja, Air Commodore Danladi Santa Bausa; Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni; Oba of Lagos, HRM Rilwan Akiolu, among others.

A court in Abu Dhabi on Sunday sentenced to death an Emirati convicted in absentia of having joined both the Islamic State group and Al-Qaeda’s branch in Syria, a newspaper reported.
The Federal Supreme Court of the United Arab Emirates also found Khalfan Sultan al-Suwaidi guilty of recruiting fighters for IS and the Qaeda-affiliated Al-Nusra Front, Gulf News reported on its website.
Suwaidi, whose current whereabouts remain unknown, would be granted a retrial if he appears in court, based on UAE law, according to the daily.
The top court in the UAE also sentenced two other Emiratis, Fares Abdulaziz and Mohammed Awad, to seven years in prison each after convicting them of having joined “terror groups in Syria”.
A third defendant was handed a three-year prison sentence after being convicted on similar charges, the daily said.
In July, the UAE executed an Emirati woman for the jihadist-inspired murder of an American school teacher in a toilet of an Abu Dhabi shopping mall in late 2014.
Also on Sunday, the Abu Dhabi court jailed a Palestinian for three years for “insulting UAE leaders and promoting the terrorist ideology” of IS, Gulf News said.
The court will meanwhile announce its verdict in the trial of 41 people allegedly seeking to overthrow the government to set up an IS-style caliphate in the Gulf state on March 6, the daily added.
The UAE is part of the US-led coalition that has been carrying out air strikes against IS in Syria since September.
It stepped up security measures since the wave of Arab Spring protests that swept the region in 2011.
Authorities have enacted tougher anti-terror legislation, including harsher jail terms and even introducing the death penalty for crimes linked to religious hatred and extremist groups.

He gave the assurance when a delegation of the pan-Yoruba sociopolitical group, Afenifere Renewal Group, ARG, paid him a courtesy visit over the weekend.
A press statement signed by Kunle Famoriyo, Afenifere’s publicity secretary, quoted the Ooni as saying the time had come for Yoruba people to unite and deploy their God-given potentials for the benefit of mankind.
The monarch advocated peaceful coexistence and a return to Yoruba cultural values.
The Ooni, who later had a close-door meeting with the group, said: “Yorubaland is abundantly blessed particularly with human resources. The problem is that abundance of wisdom may sometimes precipitate power tussle, and even that can be healthy.
“But we must realise that power belongs to God and it is He that gives it. There will be no need for superiority contentions once we realise and accept that though, all fingers are not equal; they are all important and dependent on one another.
“God’s endowment for Ijebu is different from that of Ekiti; Oyo’s is different from that of Ibadan. The lesson here is that we have common ancestry and we must deploy all our collective strengths to combat our collective weaknesses.
“Peaceful coexistence and brotherhood must be our pursuit.
“Our history has proved that once we have peace and unity of purpose, development is easy. This is my watchword and I will keep saying it. The process has started already in Ile-Ife and it will spread across Yorubaland.”
He enjoined everyone across all social cadres to work for common purpose while commending ARG’s love for Yorubaland as evidenced in its commitment to developmental issues.
He also promised to work with the group.
Speaking earlier, Olawale Oshun, ARG National Chairman, said the group embarked on the visit to congratulate the new monarch, present a proposal for his consideration on cultural renaissance and developmental template for Yorubaland and with a promise that the group will mobilise support for his laudable vision for Yorubaland.

The Borno chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) on Sunday renewed its call on the state government to implement the N18, 000 minimum wage to all Local Government workers in the state.
Malam Nuhu Saidu, the Borno NULGE Acting Secretary, said this in a communique issued at the end of the union’s State Executive Council (SEC) meeting in Maiduguri.
Saidu stated that the non-implementation of the minimum wage for the workers had brought hardship.
“Our members have been pauparised by the refusal of the state government to implement the minimum wage at the Local government level.
“This is because the cost of living has risen tremendously, but our pay has remained very small,” he said.
Saidu said that the state government had a duty to ensure the welfare of workers at the councils by implementing the minimum wage.
“We are renewing our appeal on Gov. Kashim Shettima to approve the payment of N18,000 minimum wage to all workers in the 27 Local Government Councils (LGCs) in the state.
“There is no gainsaying that the council workers in the state deserve to be paid the minimum wage as a right, just like their counterparts in the state civil service,” he said.
Saidu also demanded the payment of all promotion arrears to the council workers from 2009 till date
