Barely 24 hours after 11
persons were hacked to death in Zamadede Pil-Gani district of Langtang North
Local Government Area of Plateau State, unknown assailants suspected to be
Fulani herdsmen have attacked and killed five persons in Rakung area in the
outskirts of Barkin Ladi town in the state.
The gunmen reportedly
stormed the village at midnight yesterday when the residents were fast asleep,
and killed their victims.
Following the incident,
some irate youths in the area were said to have blocked the major road in
protest, but were quickly dispersed by some Special Task Force (STF) personnel
deployed to the area.
Spokesman of the task
force, Capt. Ikedichi Iweha, who confirmed the incident, however added that
among the dead, were some of the gunmen.
He said the troops of the
STF responded swiftly to a distress call and were able to ward off the
attackers before they could inflict heavy injuries on the hapless villagers.
Iweha added that the
soldiers were also able to disperse the youths who tried to take advantage of
the situation to cause mayhem.
“As I talk to you now,
normalcy has been restored to the area as a result of the quick response of our
men. They were also able to disperse the youths who blocked the major road and
there is presently no danger to the travelling public,” he said.
