Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, Friday, urged Nigerians to support the sincere efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari to develop the country on all fronts, just as he said that no meaningful development can take place without unity and cohesion.
Governor Ambode, who spoke shortly after performing the laying of wreath ceremony as part of activities marking the 2016 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration, said it was important for all Nigerians to rededicate their lives in a manner that would always promote unity of the country as exemplified by the supreme sacrifices paid by the fallen heroes.
The Governor said without the sacrifices paid by men and officers of the Armed Forces, there would not have been a country called Nigeria today, and as such it was for the people to always refrain from actions that are inimical to the peace, unity and oneness of the nation.
According to Governor Ambode, the current administration of President Buhari has so far displayed his passion for the development of the country, but it was important for all to support the President in his quest to massively develop the country.
Speaking on the significance of the remembrance service, Governor Ambode said: “If you look at the history of Nigeria, today we remember our fallen heroes. Without them there will be no Nigeria as we speak and so it is very important that beyond even remembering them, we should also rededicate our lives in a manner that we will always remember that the cohesion of Nigeria is so significant and that it is important for all of us to hold Nigeria together and that is really the significance of this event.”
When asked on pockets of threats to national security in some sections of the country, Governor Ambode said: “They are really not threats because they are being fully combated by the Federal Government and as you can see, we are making progress and we are having improvement on security of the country.
“So, I just want to advise Nigerians that the unity of Nigeria is more important than anything you can think of. It is only when we are united that we can make progress. You know the present administration is so particular about the development of the country. Nigeria is bigger than any individual and so we advise all Nigerians to know that the cohesion and unity of Nigeria is what is paramount to this government,” the Governor said.
Also speaking at the event, Oba Akiolu prayed for the families left behind by the fallen heroes, and urged Nigerians to be disciplined and commit to do the will of God.
He said all that the fallen heroes fought for revolved around having a united, peaceful and disciplined nation.
Other dignitaries who performed the laying of wreath at the event held at the Remembrance Arcade, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos include the Lagos State Chief Judge, Justice Olufunmilayo Atilade; Commander 9 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Bulama Biu; Commanding Officer, Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft, Apapa, Navy Commodore Abraham Adaji; Commander, 435 Base Service Group, Ikeja, Air Commodore Danladi Santa Bausa; Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni; Oba of Lagos, HRM Rilwan Akiolu, among others.

A court in Abu Dhabi on Sunday sentenced to death an Emirati convicted in absentia of having joined both the Islamic State group and Al-Qaeda’s branch in Syria, a newspaper reported.
The Federal Supreme Court of the United Arab Emirates also found Khalfan Sultan al-Suwaidi guilty of recruiting fighters for IS and the Qaeda-affiliated Al-Nusra Front, Gulf News reported on its website.
Suwaidi, whose current whereabouts remain unknown, would be granted a retrial if he appears in court, based on UAE law, according to the daily.
The top court in the UAE also sentenced two other Emiratis, Fares Abdulaziz and Mohammed Awad, to seven years in prison each after convicting them of having joined “terror groups in Syria”.
A third defendant was handed a three-year prison sentence after being convicted on similar charges, the daily said.
In July, the UAE executed an Emirati woman for the jihadist-inspired murder of an American school teacher in a toilet of an Abu Dhabi shopping mall in late 2014.
Also on Sunday, the Abu Dhabi court jailed a Palestinian for three years for “insulting UAE leaders and promoting the terrorist ideology” of IS, Gulf News said.
The court will meanwhile announce its verdict in the trial of 41 people allegedly seeking to overthrow the government to set up an IS-style caliphate in the Gulf state on March 6, the daily added.
The UAE is part of the US-led coalition that has been carrying out air strikes against IS in Syria since September.
It stepped up security measures since the wave of Arab Spring protests that swept the region in 2011.
Authorities have enacted tougher anti-terror legislation, including harsher jail terms and even introducing the death penalty for crimes linked to religious hatred and extremist groups.

The Ooni of Ile-Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has restated that his reign will be dedicated to cultural renaissance and development of Yorubaland.

He gave the assurance when a delegation of the pan-Yoruba sociopolitical group, Afenifere Renewal Group, ARG, paid him a courtesy visit over the weekend.
A press statement signed by Kunle Famoriyo, Afenifere’s publicity secretary, quoted the Ooni as saying the time had come for Yoruba people to unite and deploy their God-given potentials for the benefit of mankind.
The monarch advocated peaceful coexistence and a return to Yoruba cultural values.
The Ooni, who later had a close-door meeting with the group, said: “Yorubaland is abundantly blessed particularly with human resources. The problem is that abundance of wisdom may sometimes precipitate power tussle, and even that can be healthy.
“But we must realise that power belongs to God and it is He that gives it. There will be no need for superiority contentions once we realise and accept that though, all fingers are not equal; they are all important and dependent on one another.
“God’s endowment for Ijebu is different from that of Ekiti; Oyo’s is different from that of Ibadan. The lesson here is that we have common ancestry and we must deploy all our collective strengths to combat our collective weaknesses.
“Peaceful coexistence and brotherhood must be our pursuit.
“Our history has proved that once we have peace and unity of purpose, development is easy. This is my watchword and I will keep saying it. The process has started already in Ile-Ife and it will spread across Yorubaland.”
He enjoined everyone across all social cadres to work for common purpose while commending ARG’s love for Yorubaland as evidenced in its commitment to developmental issues.
He also promised to work with the group.
Speaking earlier, Olawale Oshun, ARG National Chairman, said the group embarked on the visit to congratulate the new monarch, present a proposal for his consideration on cultural renaissance and developmental template for Yorubaland and with a promise that the group will mobilise support for his laudable vision for Yorubaland.

The Borno chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) on Sunday renewed its call on the state government to implement the N18, 000 minimum wage to all Local Government workers in the state.
Malam Nuhu Saidu, the Borno NULGE Acting Secretary, said this in a communique issued at the end of the union’s State Executive Council (SEC) meeting in Maiduguri.
Saidu stated that the non-implementation of the minimum wage for the workers had brought hardship.
“Our members have been pauparised by the refusal of the state government to implement the minimum wage at the Local government level.
“This is because the cost of living has risen tremendously, but our pay has remained very small,” he said.
Saidu said that the state government had a duty to ensure the welfare of workers at the councils by implementing the minimum wage.
“We are renewing our appeal on Gov. Kashim Shettima to approve the payment of N18,000 minimum wage to all workers in the 27 Local Government Councils (LGCs) in the state.
“There is no gainsaying that the council workers in the state deserve to be paid the minimum wage as a right, just like their counterparts in the state civil service,” he said.
Saidu also demanded the payment of all promotion arrears to the council workers from 2009 till date

Israel’s cabinet on Sunday approved the controversial appointment of the country’s new interior minister, an ultra-Orthodox party head who had served prison time for corruption.

Aryeh Deri takes over the post after his predecessor Silvan Shalom resigned last month following allegations of sexual harassment.
His Shas party is vital to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing governing coalition, which holds a one-seat majority in parliament.
Deri, who had served as interior minister from 1988 to 1993, was  sentenced to three years in prison in 2000 for taking $155,000 in bribes, though his sentence was reduced by a third for good behaviour.
Deri resigned as economy minister in November after refusing to overrule anti-trust authorities’ objections to a major natural gas deal being pushed by Netanyahu.
His resignation allowed Netanyahu to take over the economy minister post himself and move ahead on the gas deal.
Following his resignation, Deri served as development minister for the Negev and Galilee regions.
Critics on Sunday said the interior ministry post should not be granted to someone convicted for corruption. Others argued that Deri, who is also a member of parliament, had paid his debt to society.
The interior ministry notably oversees local government and efforts to prevent illegal immigration. The police fall under a separate ministry.

Sheikh Muhammadu Isah-Kutigi has urged political leaders to abide by oath of office and remember the day of judgment in the discharge of their duties.
Isah-Kutigi, proprietor, Madarasatul Faitul Islam in Dutsen Kura Gwari, made the call during Qura’nic Graduation (Wolimat) of 114 students in Minna on Sunday.
He said the society would experience the much desired dividends of democracy when elected and appointed leaders lived above board.
“They should always remember that they have either sworn with Holy Qur’an or Holy Bible, and as such, should not renege on such oaths”, he said.
The cleric also advised leaders to shun materialism, adding that they should fear God in the discharge of their duties to the people.
The cleric called on Muslims to pray for peace, unity and progress of the country and for President Buhari to overcome the security challenges bedeviling the nation.
He said that sustained prayers would allow the nation to overcome the devilish acts threatening its peaceful coexistence.
He also urged Nigerians to continue to tolerate and live in peace with one another irrespective of religion, culture and ethnic differences
On behalf of the graduates, Miss Rukayat Baba-Muhammed, commended the proprietor for sparing his time to teach them the knowledge of Islam and the Holy Qur’an
She called on parents to enrol their children in schools to acquire both western and Islamic education.
Baba-Muhammed added that acquiring western and Islamic education would allow for a secured society as majority of youths engaged in vices due to lack of knowledge.

The South-East based Coalition of Human Rights Organisations, SBCHROs, has called on the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, the umbrella body of lawyers in Nigeria and other rights groups in the country, to direct their members to boycott courts in Nigeria in protest over President Muhammadu Buhari’s disobedience to orders of courts.
Leaders of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and Director, Radio Biafra, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu and Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd), former National Security Adviser, NSA, are still being held by the Department of State Security, DSS, despite being granted bail by courts of competent jurisdiction.
CSBHROs is comprised of Emeka Umeagbalasi of International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law (Intersociety); Aloysius Attah Anambra State Branch of the Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO; Peter Onyegiri of Centre for Human Rights and Peace Advocacy, CHRPA; Samuel Njoku of Human Rights Club, HRC, (a project of LRRDC);  Justus Ijeoma, of Forum for Justice, Equity and Defense of Human Rights, FJEDHR; Chike Umeh of Society Advocacy Watch Project, SPAW; Obianuju Igboeli of Anambra Human Rights Forum, AHRF; Alex Olisa of Southeast Good Governance Forum, SGGF; Jerry Chukwuokolo of  International Solidarity for Peace & Human Rights Initiative, ITERSOLIDARITY; Evlyn Eze of Street Law Africa, LawAfrica, and  Tochukwu Ezeoke of Igbo Ekunie Initiative (pan Igbo rights advocacy group)

CSBHROs in a statement, said: “It is no longer a subject of debate whether or not Nigeria of Buhari’s civilian presidency is tyrannical-cum-dictatorial; as the country is fully back in dictatorship or chained democracy. Nigerians should also not lose sleep or express surprises over recent or ongoing public antics and pro-dictatorial comments of the Attorney General of the Federation, Mallam Abubakar Malami, SAN, and the likes of Professor Itse Sagay, SAN, and Senator Ali Ndume, Senate Majority Leader; rather all Nigerians, particularly the NBA and other democratic forces should concern themselves sleeplessly with how to rise up endlessly against the resurrected dictatorship and its destructive forces.
“Our coordinating partner: Intersociety had severally argued expertly and seminally that the emergence of dictatorship or tyranny and its sustenance under a civilian administration, is not the sole activity of a dictator or tyrant; but a hatched conspiratorial project involving other dictatorial or tyrannical elements. It further observed that the first victims of dictatorship are the judiciary and the legislature, leading to instant death of rule of law, separation of powers and checks and balances.
“Further attestation to the existence of the two forces of opposite direction under the Buhari’s dictatorial presidency is the recent launch of online signature project spearheaded by a risen constitutional lawyer and Georgetown University law scholar, Ms Carol Ajie; for the purpose of compelling President Buhari to obey court orders and other judicial consequential pronouncements or resign or be impeached.
“This followed President Buhari’s blundered maiden media chat of December 30, 2015. The online petition signing, which has since exceeded its target, was met with a counter online petition project, launched by Buhari’s laptop activists and funded by the Presidency. While counsel Carol Ajie’s online petition targets at protecting and preserving rule of law, constitutionalism and human rights in Nigeria, the  Presidency’s sponsored online petition targets at protecting and preserving rule of lawlessness, un-constitutionalism and gross disrespect of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
“In other words, the former represents agents of change while the latter represents chain agents. Counsel Carol Ajie’s advocacy step is deeply commendable, exemplary and emulative.
Welcome development
“It further gladdens our heart to note the recent public position taken by the national leadership of the NBA against the Buhari’s recent justification to his disobedience to court orders in Nigeria, particularly as it concerns the duo of Nnamdi Kanu and Sambo Dasuki. Its insistence that court orders and judgments must be obeyed and enforced to the letter in Nigeria by all authorities and persons; is a welcome development. In Section 287 (1) (2) (3) of the 1999 Constitution, the decisions of the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, Federal High Courts, High Courts of State and FCT and other subordinate courts, shall be obeyed and enforced in any part of Nigeria by all authorities and persons including President Buhari and his AGF.
“Disobedience to court decisions is one of the dimensions of corruption and a gross abuse of office; contrary to Section 15 (5) of the 1999 Constitution. The AGF utterances under reference are worse than his principal’s blundered.
“Protection of public interest can never be equated with obvious presidential threats to citizens’ sovereignty; enshrined and entrenched in Section 14 (2) (a) of the 1999 Constitution; to the effect that sovereignty belongs to the people of Nigeria from whom government through this Constitution derives all its powers and authority. The inflammable and defenseless utterances of the AGF are therefore not surprising; which explains why English Language professors also hold that liars use passive voice while truth tellers use active voice.”

SOUTHERN Ijaw local government area of Bayelsa State will again be on the spot light tomorrow as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC conducts the rescheduled supplementary governorship election in the area.
Though the exercise is also slated to hold in 101 units across six local government areas of the state, Southern Ijaw council is no doubt the battle ground for the two leading parties, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressive Congress, APC and  it will decide who governs the state for another four years.
Described as one of the biggest local government areas in the state, Southern Ijaw also has one of the most difficult terrains in the Niger Delta. Most of its communities are far flung and could only be accessed by water.
The few communities in the council that could be reached by road are Amassoma, Igebiri and, of late, Ayama, courtesy of the Governor Seriake Dickson-led administration, which resuscitated the long abandoned Central senatorial district project.
The road, designed to link council headquarters and its adjoining communities close to the Atlantic coast in the council area to mainland Yenagoa, has reached Ayama.
Its vast swathe swamp of rivers, creeks and rivulets and dense mangrove vegetation has made effective policing of the area a herculean task for the security agencies. The area is also known for having the highest number of militant camps at the height of militancy in the Niger Delta.
Therefore, it did not come as a surprise to many when the council relapsed to its infamous past as hot bed of violence as witnessed during the December 5 and 6 governorship polls, which degenerated into bloodletting. The area was turned into a battle ground by political thugs, a development that led to the cancellation of the exercise by the INEC.
Cancellation of the exercise
•Dickson: PDP candidate
•Dickson: PDP candidate
•Sylva: APC candidate
•Sylva: APC candidate
The state REC, Baritor Kpagih, had while announcing the cancellation said there were reports that the poll in the area was “substantially” marred by violence, ballot box snatching and hostage taking of electoral officers.
The pronouncement came immediately after the state Returning Officer, Prof. Zana Akpagu, told newsmen and election observers that he would not be able to take a final decision on the exercise until the result of the Southern Ijaw election was received.
“We have yet to receive results from Southern Ijaw Local Government Area. They (Southern Ijaw LGA) have 120,827 registered voters. As a result of this, I, as the returning officer, cannot return on this election until the results of this local government (Southern Ijaw) are received,” he had declared.
INEC reacts: But the REC stated that he was, on behalf of INEC, cancelling the election in order to protect the integrity of the election process.
“You will recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission conducted governorship election in Bayelsa State on the December 5, 2015. The commission announced that the poll should be discontinued in some local government areas, including Southern Ijaw LGA of the state.
“As of today, December 7, 2015, the results of the election in all local government areas, except Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, have been collated.
“Reports on the election conducted in Southern Ijaw LGA on December 6, 2015, revealed that the election was substantially marred by violence, ballot snatching and hostage taking of electoral officers.
“These include reports from political parties, observers, both local and foreign, among others. These fall short of international acceptable standard for credible elections.
“Consequently, the commission has decided, in the interest of the integrity of the process, to cancel the governorship election in Southern Ijaw LGA. A new date for Southern Ijaw governorship election will be announced in due course.” Prior to the announcement, the state REC and some top security officers had held what was tagged ‘a security meeting’ at the INEC office in the state capital over the situation in Southern Ijaw.
Interestingly, the local government has 120,827 registered voters, the second highest after Yenagoa with 135,025 registered voters, hence the desperation of both parties to carry the day in the council, which has turned out to be the beautiful bride in the Bayelsa 2015 governorship poll.
Governor Seriake Dickson, the PDP candidate and former governor Timipre Sylva of the APC had been in the trenches in readiness for what has been dubbed as a fight to finish.
After the first round of election in seven out of the eight local government areas of the state, results from INEC have confirmed the contest as a two -horse- race between the Dickson and Sylva. According to figures from INEC, PDP polled 105,748 votes while the APC got 72,594. The Peoples Democratic Movement, PDM came a distant third. As it were, the PDP seemed to be coasting to victory before the election in Southern Ijaw  was cancelled due to widespread violence and late commencement of the voting process.
However, the APC who are trailing the PDP in second position had cried foul, claiming that they were already winning with  a landslide in Southern Ijaw from the early results. The APC further argued that if election in Southern Ijaw should be cancelled on the ground of violence, then the entire polls ought to have been cancelled as there was also widespread violence in other local councils.
In the meantime and expectedly, Southern Ijaw Local Council has become the beautiful bride because of its capacity to decide the outcome of the polls.
Accordingly, the two leading contenders, since the resheduling have been making subtle overtures to woo eligible voters.
Politics of the state
Observers of the unfolding political drama in the state had expected that the shifting of the supplementary poll to January 9 would do well to douse tension in the area, but characteristic of the politics of the state, the two contenders have continued to talk tough, trading accusations and counter accusations.
Howbeit, the two contenders have equal chances of emerging winner, but the PDP would disagree as they posit that their over 30,000 leading votes placed them as the top favourite.
Fears over poll: It is feared that the supplementary poll might not attract large turnout due to the pervading atmosphere of tension following accusations and counter-accusations from both sides of alleged stockpiling of arms in the area to be unleashed on Election Day to cow the electorates with a view to rigging the poll as well as alleged intimidation of perceived opponents by both sides.
Though the stake is high, the state governorship election poll had been characterized by voters’ apathy. The voting trend was the same in the various councils with only about 40 per cent of the registered voters coming out to cast their votes in the seven local councils so far declared.
It will be a miracle if that of Southern Ijaw council area is different.

A walk into the female ward of the Ondo Trauma Centre on a Monday afternoon, you would not but notice the calm and beautiful 51-years-old Omotola Adeyemi as she sat pensively on the remote controlled orthopaedic bed at the female ward. She must be thinking about the night of February 16th 2014 and how she and her husband ended up at the Trauma Centre on their way from a social function.
Approaching her to speak with her must have reminded her of that silent and sorrowful night, the night of February 16th 2014. At first she declined talking to journalists, but when persuaded by one of the Doctors, she decided to speak off camera in an emotion-laden voice.
Mr. Oluwagbemiga Adeyemi, Accident victim rushed to the Trauma Centre
Mr. Oluwagbemiga Adeyemi, Accident victim rushed to the Trauma Centre
When Omotola Adeyemi and her husband, Oluwagbemiga Adeyemi left their home in Ondo town on February 16th, 2014 to attend a function in Okitipupa in the Southern part of Ondo state which is less than 2-hour drive from Ondo town, little did the couple know that they won’t be returning to their home for weeks, they would have doubted the possibility of being in their neighbourhood for 2-months without getting to their abode.
The Adeyemi’s case was an unusual one, not many lived to tell the story, most times people stand in twos, threes and fours to tell such story after the demise of those involved, those are the kind of stories that make front page of national dailies with the headline “couple die in auto-crash after attending funeral”
Unlike Mrs Adeyemi who declined speaking with journalist, her husband Mr Oluwagbemiga Adeyemi seems to have put the past behind him and moved on with life. There was sign of enthusiasm boldly inscribed on his face as he spoke with this journalist.
“While coming back from Okitipupa where I and my wife went to attend a friend’s function, between Okitipupa and Ore, we had a very serious accident. I had a broken leg and my wife’s two legs were broken too, the car also got burnt, then we had a passer-by who came to our rescue and took us to Okitipupa General Hospital from where we were transferred to Trauma Centre here in Ondo.” He said
The Adeyemi’s were full of praises to the Ondo state Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, not only for the construction of the Ondo Trauma Centre, but for also equipping it with sophisticated medical equipments and qualified medical personnel.
Mrs Adeyemi said “if we were taken to Federal Medical Centre at Owo or the University Teaching Hospital at Ife that night, we probably would have died. I appreciate the Governor for this institution, it is really saving lives.”
Corroborating his wife, Mr Adeyemi said “We thank God for enabling the Governor to build this institution, this is really saving a lot of lives, it’s saving the citizenry from a lot of problems, in terms of giving accident victims prompt and efficient medical service. We want to appreciate God and the Governor for putting up this kind of institution here. If not for this centre here, the two of us would have died that night.”
“When we got here, immediately we were taken to the theatre where an operation was conducted on us and it was successful. We went for two operations and they were successful. There are adequate equipment in the hospital, the Doctors were up and doing and they lived to
expectations.
Doctors at the Theatre performing surgical operation on Maxwell
Doctors at the Theatre performing surgical operation on Maxwell
In a circumstance not too different from the Adeyemi’s story, is the case of 42-years-old Maxwell Asoro, an indigene of Delta state and a Ph.D holder, who was also involved in an auto accident in Lagos, but had to relocate to the Ondo Trauma Centre after lack of improvement at the private hospital where he was been treated in Lagos.
“I had an accident in 2013 and I’ve undergone different surgeries at a Private Hospital in Lagos, but the surgery failed. A friend of mine then recommended this place and I came from Lagos.
“I was admitted here in March 2014, and I had undergone two surgeries, one on my tibia (bone elongation) and I had partial rip replacement, I’m recuperating right now and I hope to be discharged in a few days from now.
“When I came I was marvelled with what I saw here in terms of the care and the facilities. My coming here from Lagos is really worth it” said a highly elated Maxwell.
Like many other patients at the centre, 28-years-old Omolara Fadayomi was excited at the construction of the Trauma Centre in Ondo, saying that with the establishment of the centre “the rate of casualty being recorded in road crashes in Ondo state and other neighbouring states will surely reduce drastically, if the people can find their way to the centre.”
One would have wondered what could have prompted the Governor Olusegun Mimiko-led Ondo State Government to build such facility with standard and up to date medical equipments, but with the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC’s, scary statistics on road crashes in Nigeria, it is therefore easy to understand the need for an Ondo Trauma Centre and many of such facilities in other parts of the country.
According to the Head, Policy, Research and Statistics Department of the FRSC, Dr Kayode Olagunju, between 1960 and 2012, some 1,060,507 crashes were recorded in Nigeria, with 322,427 deaths and 1,016,299 injuries.
“In 2012 alone, there was a report of a total of 4,260 deaths on Nigerian roads; an average of 12 persons died daily and with 20,752 injured.
“Hence, on the average, 69 persons were either injured or killed on our roads daily; 48,114 persons were involved in 6,269 documented cases.” Olagunju said
In cases where accident victims manage to survive the crashes, aggravation of their woes by their rescuers, the proximity of an hospital to the accident site, which, in many cases, is always far away and lack of access to modern and standard medical facilities like the ones at the Ondo Trauma Centre, are some of the factors which lead to the death of the little who manage to survive the crashes.
Having put all these into consideration and to combat this challenge, the Chief Medical Director of the Ondo Trauma Centre, Dr Olugbenga Ige, an Orthopedic and Spine Surgeon, noted that “We have Advanced Life Support Ambulances on the highways located in stations specially constructed to allow these ambulances to easily access the highways and cover the length of the highways where they are located.
“When there is an accident, we have toll free numbers that people can call to get direct access to our call centre and notify us of an accident, when we get the calls, these ambulances that are stacked with paramedics, the extricators, and rescuers get to the scene of accident within 15 minutes, and professionally rescue victims from a wreckage of accident, such that they do not aggravate the degree of injury sustained and actually give them chances to survive, due to the extent of injury they’ve sustained and properly transport them to where the injury can be properly cared for.”
Highlighting some of the distinct features that make the ambulance standout among other kinds of ambulance, the CMD said; “In the ambulances, we have advanced life support gadgets, in addition we’ve also trained ordinary citizens to be first respondents, there is an ongoing campaign on that and we are still recruiting more people into the system.”
Bearing in mind that the desired result cannot be achieved with Ondo Trauma Centre alone, which is located at the Central part of the state, and to ensure that accident victims are promptly and appropriately attended to in a well-equipped facility, the state government have also upgraded the accident and emergency unit of general hospitals across the state to handle to a great extent, some level of injuries and the apex of this hospital system is the Trauma centre at Ondo.
“With our well equipped facility, when an accident victim gets to this hospital they are promptly and appropriately attended to, and irrespective of the nature or severity of injuries sustained by victims, once they get here, they are given a genuine chance of survival,” Ige, who sits atop the world class 100-bed medical facility, boasted.
Despite the qualified and well trained personnel and the state of the art equipments available at the centre, the cost of treatment is affordable to all class of citizens.

Governor Mimiko had, in his second term inaugural address, stated that one of the major aims of building the Trauma Centre is to “drastically reduce the toll of trauma especially Road Traffic Accident on our people.”
First with the Mother and Child Hospital in Akure in 2010 and Ondo in 2012, which has drastically reduced infant and maternal mortality in the state, Mimiko’s success in the health sector cannot be over-emphasised, many a times it has been echoed and re-echoed in the media such that the Abiye Safe Motherhood has become an household name in Nigeria and beyond, not only that, the initiative has also won him local and global awards and accolades.
While many have attributed Mimiko’s success in the health sector to his background as a Medical Doctor, many have attributed the success to his political will to provide quality health care for the people at zero and affordable cost.
The yet-to-be-commissioned Ondo Trauma has been accredited for Post Graduate Residency Training in Radiology and Anaesthesia by the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) and National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN). Local and International experts have however noted that the centre is now a model for other states in the country and in the Africa continent.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has presented the state’s 2016 budget of N111.5 billion to the state House of Assembly for consideration and approval.
Tagged “Budget of Finishing Well” the 2016 budget is 12.6 percent lower than the 2015 budget which was revised downward to N127.01 billion due to economic realities.
Presenting the budget, the governor said: “The reduction is in line with current economic realities, especially developments in the international oil market and the dwindling inflows from the Federation Account.”
He said that the policy focus of the Year 2016 Budget was the completion or near completion of on-going road construction/rehabilitation projects across the state, noting that roads at various stages of completion would be accorded priority.

A breakdown of the budget shows that education and health sub-sectors took the lion share with N14 billion each followed by roads infrastructure at N9.24 billion and flood and erosion control at N8 billion.
The governor assured people of the state that “In the 2016 fiscal year, efforts would be geared towards substantial completion of all the outstanding storm water projects across the state, the completion of the Auchi, Queen Ede and Ekekhuan gully erosion remediation projects, substantial completion of all current streetlight projects and institutionalization of the process of maintenance of all built infrastructure, streetlights, drains, among others.

Second Republic governor of the Old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo has denied ever receiving any money from the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA.
Nwobodo in a statement made available to Vanguard Monday nevertheless admitted knowledge of a N500 million campaign package from the immediate past national chairman of the Peoples Democratic, PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu‘azu given to the five Southeast states ahead of the last elections.
Nwobodo who is currently abroad on a medical spoke in response to reported claims by former minister of state for finance, Bashir Yuguda that Nwobodo received N100 million from the funds he, Yuguda got from the ONSA.

Besides Nwobodo, Yuguda had reportedly claimed to have given N100 million to the five other chairmen of the Contact and Mobilisation Committee of the PDP for the 2015 general election.
The others mentioned were Amb. Yerima Abdullahi (North-East); Dr. Peter Odili (South-South); Chief Bode George, Southwest, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa (North-West); and Dr. Ahmadu Ali (North-Central).
George has, however, denied the claim.
Nwobodo denied ever meeting the erstwhile National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd.) and of having met Yuguda only once.
Nwobodo who was chairman of the Southeast zonal PDP presidential campaign committee said that the only money he was aware of was the N500 million received from Mu‘azu as national chairman which he said was explicitly given for campaign in the five Southeast states. The money he said was distributed in equal batches of N100 million to the five states and said he was ready to disclose the channels through who the money was disbursed should it be necessary.
Noting that it was out of place for him as a loyal party man to ask the source of the money received from the national chairman, he said:“In the first place, I don’t know Col. Sambo Dasuki; I have never met him in person; I have never had any interaction with him. And I didn’t receive money from him.
“The party, during the general election, approved N500 million to be given to the South East zone for the campaigns. We have five states and when those of us nominated from the South East zone met, we were asked to choose a chairman and they choose me and their chairman.
“After series of meetings, it was agreed that the chairman of the party should make fund available to the committee to enable us start work in our respective states.
“They invited us to the residence of the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Adamu Mu’azu, who handed over money to me for the zone, for the election. I invited the chairmen of each of the state campaign committee and we disbursed the money, with each state receiving N100 million each.”

Manchester City striker Yaya Toure is laying claim to the goal, which secured a win against Swansea  last Saturday.
Toure’s stoppage time effort bounced off the back of Kelechi Iheanacho into the net. Toure argued that the ball was heading straight into the net, and the deflection from Iheancho was immaterial. Majority of Manchester City fans back his claim for the goal.

“When you see the action, the ball was going into the net.
“When you shoot on target I think it is your goal because the intention was to score so can we do?
“We’ll see what the verdict is but as far as I’m concerned, it’s mine,” he told the club’s official website, www.mcfc.co.uk.
City fans also agree with Toure as 60 per cent of them who took part in an online poll conducted by the club’s website voted that the goal be credited to him.  Forty per cent of the 10,120 fans who voted however disagreed, insisting that the goal be credited to Iheanacho.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday reserved judgment in a case challenging the election of Senators Bukola Saraki and Ike Ekweremadu as Senate President and Deputy Senate President respectively.
Justice Adeniyi Ademola made the pronouncement after counsel to the parties adopted their written addresses.
Senators Abu Ibrahim, Kabir Marafa, Robert Boroffice and Sulieman Hunkuyi filed the suit challenging the process that led to the elections of the two principal officers.
Further the Clerk of the National Assembly and that of the Senate are also listed as respondents.
The plaintiffs are seeking a declaration that the Senate Standing Order 2011 (as amended) was the valid and subsisting Standing Order of the 8th Senate.
They are also seeking declaration that the Senate Standing Order 2015 (as amended) not being a product of any legitimate amendment pursuant to the extant provision of rule 110 of Senate Order, was illegal.
They also want a declaration that the election of Saraki and Ekweremadu as President and Deputy Senate President pursuant to Senate Standing Order 2015, was illegal.
The plaintiffs, therefore, prayed the court to hold that the processes were carried out contrary to the provisions of Rule 3 (3) (e) and (k) and Chapter two of the Senate Standing Order 2011 (as amended).
Consequently, they sought an order setting aside the purported elections of the two most senior principal officers.
They had further sought an order directing the 8th Senate to elect a presiding officer in accordance with the provision of Section 54 (1) of the constitution.
They urged the court to order the Senate to comply with Rules 3(3) (e) (i) and (k) of the Senate Standing Order of 2011 (as amended) forthwith.
Furtherance to the reliefs, Chief Mamman Ousman (SAN), counsel to the plaintiff held that his clients had the “locus standi’’ to institute the action.
According to him, the plaintiffs are citizens of the country charged with the responsibility to defend breaches of the country’s constitution.
He also submitted that the plaintiffs were senators that were directly affected negatively by the “shoddy’’ process and outcome of the election.
On the jurisdiction of the court to hear the suit, Ousman said that the legislative immunity of the National Assembly did not extend to violation of the Senate Rules and the Constitution.
“The court has the power to interfere when statutorily laid down procedure of doing an act is breached. In fact, the constitution does not provide for legislative immunity.
“The legislative immunity is provided by legislative Act. This Act only relates to spoken words and written words.
“Meanwhile, the complaint relates to a particular period preceding the session of the plenary that the act was done’’, he said.
On his part, Mr Kayode Aleja (SAN), counsel to Saraki and Clerk of the Senate, said the plaintiffs were interlopers and therefore, lacked the requisite jurisdiction to initiate the suit.
Aleja said “it will amount to interference should the court arrogates jurisdiction to itself to decide this matter’’.
Arguing on a point of law, Aleja said counsel to the plaintiffs misappropriated fact and law to submit that the Senate Standing Order had the flavour of the Constitution.
“The suit is simply a complaint that focuses on the alleged breach of the Senate Rules and has nothing to do with the Constitution.
“The Senate Standing Order is a document that regulates activities of the Senate and this is subject to change or amendment as they progress. It remains a distinct rule,’’ he said.
Mr Ikechukwu Ezechukwu (SAN), counsel to Ekweremadu, in aligning himself to Aleja’s submission, said the Senate Standing Order was made pursuant to the constitution.
However, he said the document remained an independent set of rules that must not be subjected to test by the court.
“Any attempt to do this will mean the usurpation of the power of the legislative arm of government by another arm. The court must refuse the invitation to do this’’, he said.
Miss Nancy Odimegwu, counsel to the Clerk of the National Assembly aligned herself with the submissions of both Aleja and Ezechukwu.
She, therefore, urged the court to dismiss the, suit against her client for lack of merit.

After winning the CAF Under-23 African Cup of Nations coach Samson Siasia has stressed the need for his team and the Nigeria Football Federation to tidy arrangements, if Nigeria were to do well at the 2016 Olympics.
Siasia
Siasia
Siasia was speaking against the back drop of the hiccups in preparations for the tournament, which Nigeria won last Saturday, beating Algeria 2-1 in final. Siasia who won a silver at the Beijing 2008 Olympics stated that Nigeria was lucky to CAF U-23 tournament if face of the distractions.
“There is a whole lot of work to be done between now and August if we have to go far in the Olympics.
“I wasn’t even sure we could make it to the final in Dakar. But hard work and intense discussions after every game ensured the boys corrected their mistakes – we came out victorious.
“There can be no substitute for hard work, concentration, serious focus and that’s what we’re going to do.
“If you don’t get it right, you’re in trouble at a major tournament like the Olympics. We still have a lot of tidying up to do over all.
“I have to thank the players for what they have done but they should not let it get to their heads because we need to correct our mistakes and improve our game before the Olympics.”

IT usually turns out to be an interesting reading, interviews with politicians who readily blurt out funny comments that are not thoughtful and cannot be adjudged to be  helpful to communal politics like the recent one of Mr. Orobosa Omo-Ojo (in the Vanguard of Saturday, December 5, 2015.) in which he was described as a journalist, publisher, a frontline All Progressives Congress, APC stalwart and former Commissioner in Adams Oshiomhole government in Edo State.
With the above description, I suppose he is still the same Orobosa Omo-Ojo, who along with one Emeka Ogbeide were assigned by the then Lucky Igbinedion government to turn the state government owned Nigerian Observer newspaper around? We are all living witnesses to the messy sickening situation the paper was abandoned – worse than as the duo met it.
I really find it irritating to read comments by some individuals who were given the opportunity to perform and at the end, loopholes were created for questions to be asked. I equally find it painful to understand, why in this era of journalism, searching questions are never put during interviews bordering on past public performances.
Specifically, the Vanguard reporter who interviewed Mr. Omo-Ojo was, perhaps not aware of Mr. Omo-Ojo’s tenure at the Nigerian Observer, certainly he wouldn’t claim ignorance of Omo-Ojo’s tenure as the State Commissioner for Transport in the present Governor Oshiomhole’s Executive Council. The reporter didn’t find it as a professional responsibility on behalf of his numerous readers to, among other questions, ask the former Commissioner what led to his exit from the State Executive Council.
In any professional calling, individuals are at liberty to create titles for themselves. In journalism, one could carry the toga of a publisher, but the proof in the title is judged by its reputation, regularity on the vendor’s stand and above all, the contents and educative pursuits of such a title. The ruining of any calling could be checked with the realistic defence of such a body by its practitioners, whose reputation has been tested and found not wanting, but the JOURNALISM calling has, for decades suffered a profound set back because of the inability of the various branches to put in place a defensive concrete wall around its image.
In reference to the interview in question, I find it quite uncalled for to dwell on it other than to say this: An individual’s opinion can sway the support of thousands of voters in opposing political parties and this view is based on how seriously such a talker is judged. It’s an open factuality that any realistic registered voter when asked to judge Governor Oshiomhole’s performance in Edo State, would certainly score him HIGH, unless hunger blindfolds such voters to go for the negative side. The “rice man’s” advertorials to a realistic Edo citizen, would point to nothing other than rural Nollywood acting.
What are the researched data that have established that even the Esan people would give him nomination? Sweet talks never create acceptability for a drowning character.
Simply put, the three Senatorial districts of Edo State are in individualistic positions to assess Oshiomhole’s service and certainly not political grammar scripts as beautifully delivered by Mr. Omo-Ojo in the interview.
I had compelled myself to observe elsewhere that both the Esama and Governor Oshiomhole have no personal scores to iron out, other than giving what is due to the government on behalf of the people.
Who creates bounds for people to under-step or over-step? Not Mr. Omo-Ojo. Holding his recent chat with the Vanguard under his armpit to deliver or read to the Esama’s hearing is neither helpful to the issue of rate settlement. Declaring his claimed exchanges with Governor Oshiomhole before the reading public only unveils Mr. Omo-Ojo’s tactlessness in politics. If you are with one in a battle field as your Commander, you either fight along with him as your Commander, or become a run away soldier, but certainly cannot put in place a countering-one sector Commander who will fall in no given time.
I am certainly looking forward to see Mr. Omo-Ojo’s next political level, unlike his past two callings. He should score himself for the public to judge.
The beauty in newspaper interviews is easily oiled with its surface empty coloring. There is still this staining attributes of many on the surface political noise makers who take the readers for granted, they have spoken well, yet, they aren’t aware of the simple truth-building realistic structures for the people to see and for their benefit is more acceptable than being noisy.
Drainage channels and walkways as built by Oshiomhole government are emblems of progressive governance. And for refuse dumps, years back, there were locations in various communities where refuse collections are burnt.
The modern structures throughout the various roads in the state are meant for progressive changes in healthy attitudes and not for nomadic behaviors.
I am certainly looking forward to see Mr. Omo-Ojo’s next political level, unlike his past two callings – to revive the Nigerian Observer titles and most recently, a former Commissioner. He should score himself for the public to judge.
Usman Abudah, a journalist and documentalist, wrote from Benin City, Edo State.

No fewer than 20 members of the Shi’ite sect were killed, yesterday, as the military cracked down on the sect for blocking the highways during their public procession in Zaria, Kaduna State. The sect, however, claimed that hundreds of its members were killed by soldiers who stormed three of its locations with heavy military weapons. It was gathered that the  troops engaged members of the sect throughout the night as heavy shootings and sounds of explosions were heard in Gyallesu and Sokoto Road, where Hussainiyya – the spiritual centre of the sect – is located.
The Nigerian Army and members of the sect have accused each other of instigating attacks that led to the death of members of the movement on Saturday.
Zakzaky'
Zakzaky’
While the Army accused the Shiite followers of attempting to assassinate Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, the Islamic movement said soldiers simply decided to attack “defenceless people”.
The army on its part vowed to put an end to the threats, delays and disruption caused by the group.
Meanwhile, the where about of the leader of the sect,  Sayyid Ibraheem Zakzaky was unknown as the sect claimed that its members, who were killed, included  the leader of the Kano Centre, Sheikh Muhammad Turi, the son of sect leader, Sayyid Ibraheem Zakzaky and his wife.
In its account of the violent confrontation between it and the military, the sect, in a statement by its spokesman,  Ibrahim Musa said: “Following alleged blockade of the route of the Chief of Army Staff by the members of the Movement, the Nigerian Army brutally descended on armless members of the Movement with heavy military weapons killing indiscriminately.
Those killed
“In the mean time, leading members of the Islamic Movement and other members as well, have been killed by the soldiers including the leader of the Kano Center, Sheikh Muhammad Turi, Dr. Mustapha Sa’eed, Malam Ibrahim Usman and Sister Jummai Gilima.
“Also killed were Sayyid Aliy, the son of the leader of the Movement, Sayyid Ibraheem Zakzaky; the wife of Sayyid Ibraheem Zakzaky, Malama Zeenat Ibraheem  and tens of other members as more are being killed as at the time of this release.
“The sporadic killings took place at three  locations that included the residence of the revered leader of the Movement at Gyallesu, the Husainiyya Bakiyatullah at the GRA and the Darur Rahma located along Zaria-Jos road where many unarmed people were killed.
“The killing was so brutal at Gyallesu that even those injured in the shooting were identified and killed in cold blood by the soldiers. And as at the time of writing this press release, the victims are in their hundreds, if not thousands.
“Considering the gross violation of fundamental human rights and extra-judicial killings perpetrated by the Nigerian Army, the Islamic Movement hereby condemns these unjustifiable acts.
“We state categorically that the claim by the Army that members of the Movement attempted to assassinate the Chief of Army Staff was a blatant lie as the army came back to launch their attack more than an hour after the COAS had passed.
“Clearly, the Nigerian government through its military is now on rampage in an all out war with the Islamic movement, its members and structures.  The scale of this attack would suggest it was meticulously planned by authorities and now being executed ruthlessly. The alleged attack on COAS Burutai was just an alibi.
“Therefore, with all pointers at the government as the contractor of the killings, we hereby call on well meaning Nigerians and the international community to intervene and seek redress for the victims and their family members as many innocent people have unjustifiably been killed and many others severely injured.
“In the mean time, there is no idea as to the where about of the leader of the Movement, Sayyid Ibraheem Zakzaky nor his current condition, and aggrieved members of the Movement across the country have taken to the streets in protests”.
The killing of Turi, the leader of the Kano Center, has sparked tension in Kano, as members of the sect staged a rally from Saturday night till about 4am on Sunday. Another rally held on Sunday around Fagged Mosque, popularly known as ‘Waje Mosque’. According to a Kano resident, tens of thousands of Shi’ia members trooped to the nooks and crannies of Kano, passing through the palace of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, and raining expletives on the military personnel attached to Tukur Buratai, chief of army staff.
Army vows to ensure law and order prevail

The Nigerian Army in a statement giving an update on the confrontation  said, “Saturday’s incident involving clashes between detachments of the Nigerian Army, accompanying the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General TY Buratai and followers of Sheikh Ibrahim El Zak-Zaky, suspected to be members of the Shiite Sect in Zaria, leading to loss of lives as a result of the Shiite group members’ blocking roads and not allowing other passers-by to go about their lawful businesses and activities, was most unfortunate.
“The Nigerian Constitution guarantees the rights of any group of persons and Sheikh El Zak Zaky’s followers to hold a peaceful march or procession unhindered, but it also guarantees other people’s rights of way on public highways.
“It is important to note that over the years this group has subjected ordinary citizens using public roads to untold hardship, delays, threats and disruption simply because they insist on using public space irrespective of inconvenience and hardship on other law abiding citizens and motorists.”
The statement signed by Col. Sani Usman, Acting Director, Army Public relations said: “This cannot be tolerated and must stop!
“As soon as order is restored to the situation in Zaria city and its environs, the Police will conduct an enquiry and the public will be informed.
“In the meantime, the public is advised to go about their lawful business and report any suspicious persons or incidents to the police.
In an earlier statement on the clash, the army said that members of the Shiite Islamic sect Saturday attacked the Chief of Army staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai and his convoy on their way to Zaria to attend the passing out parade of 73rd regular intake of Depot, Nigerian Army.
The army added that the attack was a planned assassination attempt on the army boss which was repelled and that the army Chief escaped unhurt.
In the ensuing shootout that followed, an unspecified number of persons lost their lives while there were injuries on both the side of the army and the Shiites.
A statement by the Army had said : “The sect numbering hundreds and carrying dangerous weapons, barricaded the roads with bonfires, heavy stones and tyres.
“They refused all entreaties to disperse and then started firing and pelting the convoy with dangerous objects.
“The barricade was obviously a deliberate attempt to assassinate the Chief of Army Staff and members of his entourage while on a legitimate official assignment as Special Guest of Honour at the passing out parade which has earlier been widely publicized.
Continuing it said, “The troops responsible for the safety and security of the Chief of Army Staff on hearing explosion and firing were left with no choice than to defend him and the convoy at all cost as well as open up the barricaded road for law abiding citizens.
“This is in line with the Nigerian Army Rules of Engagement and Code of Conduct.
“This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated from any individual or groups and should not be allowed to repeat itself.
“We wish to implore all Nigerians to continue to be law abiding and remain conscious of other people’s right to life, freedom of movement and passage.
“The Chief of Army escaped unhurt and continued with his duties.

Ado Ekiti—The Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Prof. Oye Bandele yesterday lamented poor attitude of students to payment of school fees, saying only 2,000 out of the 17,600 students population of the institution have paid their tuition fees.
This was just as the VC promised to convoke a summit on Internally Generated Revenue, with intention to make every faculty a viable revenue generating sources to make up for the dwindling funds accruing to the institution.
Speaking in Ado Ekiti yesterday, the Vice Chancellor, who resumed office December 1, following the expiration of his predecessor’s tenure, Prof Oladipo Aina, also disclosed that the management would soon begin a two-year programme leading to the conversion of Higher National Diploma certificate to degree status.
Expressing concern over the refusal of the students to pay fully the N40,000 tuition fee, Prof Bandele said the nonchalant attitude to school fees payment could frustrate his efforts in the provision of infrastructures and welfare packages.
He appealed to the 15,600 students who are yet to pay their fees, to redeem their full payment before December 20, 2016.
The former Vice Chancellor of the scrapped University of Science and Technology, Ifaki Ekiti and Ekiti State University of Education, said the university is setting machinery in motion for the exploration of business ventures like bakery, block industry, sachet water business, farming etc , to shore up the IGr of the institution in view of the dwindling allocation to the state.
The scholar promised to build on the legacy left by his predecessor in infrastructural development through public –private partnership initiative.
